CrossFit: Anti-Water Bottle Fitness
Saturday, September 13th:
I'm glad that I got most of you to admit that the only reason you carry a water bottle with you to the workout is for an excuse to take a break. For the rest of you, I managed to dig up an old post from Arthur DeVany, the man who for all intents and purposes invented the idea of "Evolutionary Fitness", which CrossFit has used numerous times to explain the philosophy behind its methods. The post, which you can find here, provides many interesting reasons why carrying a water bottle with you when you work out is a waste of time, including:
- It slows you down and you won't work out hard enough and quickly enough.
- The drink will lower your core temperature when you want to elevate it to promote growth hormone.
- In a work out of 30 to 40 minutes you can't sweat enough to become dehydrated.
The bottom line for me is that drinking water should be the farthest thing from your mind when you are trying to complete a workout as fast as you can. If you are stopping to take water breaks you're not focused on the workout, which means you aren't working as hard as you can, which means you are compromising the potential results you will see from it.
